The brief

About this project

A cedar-clad garden room had been installed at the end of a garden that was still bare earth and broken old paving. We created a large porcelain patio along the house, a hot tub area and a fresh lawn that leads the eye down to the garden room.

The starting point

The owners had invested in a garden room, but the space between it and the house was bare soil, old slabs and spoil. It wasn't usable and it made the new building look unfinished.

What we did

We cleared the old paving, set new levels so the patio, lawn and garden room all sit comfortably together, and built a deep compacted base. Pale porcelain was laid along the back of the house with a clean straight edge into the lawn. A level, solid area was built in for a hot tub and a hanging chair, so the patio works as an outdoor living room.

Why it works

Light porcelain keeps a north or east-facing garden bright, and the straight line of the lawn draws you towards the garden room. It is a layout that suits the long, narrow gardens common in Slough, Langley, Datchet, Windsor and Egham.

  • Defined edging between patio and lawn
  • Ground preparation and new lawn
  • Level base for a hot tub and seating
