The brief

About this project

A tight courtyard between brick walls had uneven old slabs and nowhere to sit. We rebuilt it with horizontal slatted timber screening, a rendered raised planter with lighting, grey porcelain and low-maintenance artificial grass.

The starting point

Small courtyards between buildings are common on newer homes and terraces across Slough, Langley, Colnbrook and Staines. This one had old, uneven paving, bare brick walls and the stacked timber ready for the job. It felt like a passage rather than a garden.

What we did

We stripped the old slabs, rebuilt the base and laid grey porcelain with tight joints. A long wall was clad in horizontal slatted timber to soften the brick and add warmth. In front of it we built a raised planter with coping and lighting, so the space glows at night. The far end was finished in artificial grass, which stays green in shade where real lawn struggles.

The finished space

The courtyard now feels designed, private and easy to look after, with no mowing and a planter for year-round colour. Slatted screening and planters are a popular choice for Windsor, Eton and Datchet homes where outdoor space is tight.
