Tree Pruning & Crown Reduction

Reduce a tree's height and spread, keep its natural shape, and let light back into your garden.

Overview

Tree Pruning & Crown Reduction by MAFFS

Crown reduction shortens the outer branches evenly to make a tree smaller while keeping its natural shape. It's often the best answer when a tree is healthy but too big for the space.

We prune to good practice, cutting back to suitable growth points rather than 'topping', which leaves ugly stubs and weak regrowth.

FAQs

Tree Pruning & Crown Reduction questions

Not when it's done properly. We take off a sensible amount, cutting to good growth points, so the tree recovers well.

Most trees can be pruned in late autumn and winter when they're dormant. Some, like cherries and walnuts, are better pruned in summer. We'll advise for your tree.

Usually around 20–30% of the crown at one time, depending on species and health.
