The brief

About this project

Outside a large conservatory the ground was bare and muddy. We laid a dark sandstone patio along the conservatory, built a sleeper raised bed, laid a new lawn and finished it with black gravel edging.

The starting point

After earlier work the garden behind this conservatory was left as bare earth and mud, with machine tracks across it. There was no clean way to step out of the conservatory.

What we did

We excavated and built a solid base, then laid dark sandstone right along the conservatory so it can be used straight from the doors. Black gravel along the edge keeps splash-back off the glass. A sleeper raised bed adds a planted feature, and the rest of the garden was turfed for a soft green finish.

The finished space

Dark sandstone looks rich when wet and hides everyday wear, a good match for homes near the river in Datchet, Wraysbury, Old Windsor and Staines where gardens see a lot of rain.
