Stump grinding vs stump removal: which do you need?

The difference between stump grinding and full stump removal, how deep each goes, and which suits a lawn, bed, patio or extension.

Stump grinding

A grinder chips the stump away to typically 200–300mm below ground, along with the main surface roots. It's quick, tidy and fits through most side gates.

It's the right choice for lawns, flower beds and most patios. The hole is backfilled with topsoil and can be turfed or planted.

Full stump removal

Full removal digs out the whole root plate. It's slower, more disruptive and leaves a large hole, so it's usually only needed where you're building foundations or laying a driveway right over the spot.

What about leaving it?

Stumps can sprout, attract fungi and get in the way of mowing. Grinding usually costs much less than people expect, especially when done straight after felling.
