How much does a new patio cost in Berkshire?

What affects the price of a new patio in Slough, Windsor and Berkshire, from materials and groundwork to access and drainage. Plus how to get an accurate quote.

The short answer

Most patio prices are worked out per square metre, and the total depends far more on what's under the slabs than on the slabs themselves. Across the UK, a professionally laid patio typically falls somewhere between £100 and £250+ per m², including groundwork, materials and labour. Premium porcelain, complex cuts, steps and drainage push it towards the top of that range.

What affects the price

Materials: Indian sandstone is usually the most affordable natural stone. Porcelain costs more per slab and needs specialist cutting, but is very low maintenance.

Groundwork: removing old paving, turf and soil, and building a compacted sub-base, is often half the job. Clay soils, found across much of Slough and Maidenhead, can need deeper excavation.

Access: if materials and spoil have to go through the house or down a narrow side path, it takes longer.

Levels and drainage: steps, retaining walls, channel drains and falls away from the house add cost, but prevent problems later.

Extras: sleeper beds, lighting, coping, gravel borders and pathways.

Where not to cut corners

A thin sub-base or slabs laid on dots of mortar are the usual cause of rocking, sinking and standing water. We lay on a full mortar bed over a compacted MOT Type 1 base, with a fall to carry rainwater away from the house.

Getting an accurate quote

Measure roughly how big you'd like the area, take a few photos of the garden and access, and think about which material you like. Send them through our quote form and we'll arrange a visit.

Common questions

A typical 20–40m² patio takes around 3–7 working days, depending on groundwork, access and weather.

Rear-garden patios generally don't need planning permission. Front-garden hard surfaces over 5m² need to be permeable or drain to a permeable area, or they will need permission.
