Indian sandstone
Natural stone with beautiful variation in colour and texture. It suits period homes, cottage gardens and anyone who likes a softer, traditional look. Sandstone is porous, so it weathers and can pick up algae in shady spots. A good clean and sealing helps.
Porcelain
Made in a kiln, porcelain is dense, consistent and barely absorbs water, so it resists stains, moss and fading. It gives a crisp, contemporary finish and works well with modern homes and large-format slabs. It costs more to buy and cut, and needs a specialist slurry primer to bond properly.
Side by side
Look: sandstone is natural and varied, porcelain is clean and uniform.
Maintenance: porcelain is lower; sandstone benefits from periodic cleaning and sealing.
Cost: sandstone is usually cheaper to supply and lay.
Grip: both are available with textured finishes; choose an outdoor-rated slip resistance for porcelain.
