Composite vs timber decking: pros, cons and costs

Comparing composite, softwood and hardwood decking for UK gardens: lifespan, maintenance, look and value.

Softwood timber

Pressure-treated softwood is the most affordable option and looks natural. It needs treating every year or two to keep it looking good and to slow weathering.

Hardwood

Dense hardwoods have a rich colour and a long life, and they pair beautifully with stone patios. They cost more, and are heavier to work with.

Composite

Made from a mix of wood fibre and plastic, composite boards resist rot, splinters and fading and only need an occasional wash. They cost more up front but save on maintenance over the years.

The frame matters most

Whatever boards you choose, the frame underneath decides how long the deck lasts. We build on treated joists with proper spacing, ventilation and weed control, so the deck stays solid.
