Fence heights and boundary rules explained

How high can a garden fence be, who owns which side, and how to avoid disputes with neighbours. A practical guide for homeowners.

How high can my fence be?

Up to 2m in most back gardens without planning permission, including any trellis on top. Next to a road or footpath used by vehicles, the limit is usually 1m.

Which side is mine?

Your title deeds may show boundary responsibility, often with a 'T' mark. If they don't, it's worth talking to your neighbour before replacing a shared fence.

The 'good side' myth

There's no law saying the smooth side must face your neighbour, but it's good manners and common practice. Our closeboard and slatted designs look good from both sides.
