Block paving vs resin driveways

Which driveway is best for your home? We compare block paving and resin-bound driveways on looks, drainage rules, maintenance and lifespan.

Block paving

Hard-wearing, repairable and available in a wide range of colours and patterns, with contrasting borders for a smart finish. Individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if needed. Joints may need re-sanding and weeding over time.

Resin-bound

A smooth, seamless finish that's permeable, so it helps meet front-garden drainage rules. It's low maintenance and comfortable to walk on, but quality depends on the base and on careful mixing and laying.

Drainage and the 5m² rule

Paving more than 5m² of a front garden with an impermeable surface needs planning permission unless water drains to a permeable area. Resin-bound and permeable block paving are designed to avoid this.

Which is right for you?

Block paving suits traditional and modern homes and heavy use. Resin suits a clean, contemporary look. We'll recommend the best option for your frontage at the site visit.
