The brief

About this project

The front garden was excavated with our digger and rebuilt as a charcoal block paved driveway laid in herringbone, with a neat border and planted edge.

The starting point

The front of the house had a small lawn and old surfacing with nowhere sensible to park. We brought in a mini digger to excavate the whole area.

What we did

A driveway has to carry the weight of cars for years, so depth matters. We dug out to the correct depth, laid and compacted a Type 1 sub-base in layers, screeded a sharp sand bed and laid charcoal blocks in a herringbone pattern, the strongest pattern for driveways because the blocks lock together under load. Edge restraints and a border hold it all in place.

The finished space

The house now has a clean, hard-wearing driveway that adds kerb appeal and parking. We build driveways like this across Slough, Langley, Iver, Burnham, Maidenhead and Windsor.
